A mentor is a guide. A resource who paves the way to success and derives satisfaction from helping others succeed. Your role as a mentor is to inspire, encourage, and support your mentee and to contribute to their professional and personal development.

  • What is SEMI Mentoring?  SEMI Mentoring is an online, on-demand flash mentoring program that connects you to current college students exploring the industry. The program leverages the SEMI’s partnership with the American Semiconductor Academy, connecting our member companies to students at over 200 partner universities and community colleges in the U.S.
  • What is flash mentoring?  One-time or flash mentoring allows mentors and mentees to schedule meetings on a one-off basis to discuss specific topics. Flash mentoring allows mentors to meet multiple students for short periods of time (30 minutes or less), enabling mentors to access a broader range of students than traditional, longer-term mentorships. Mentors and mentees will complete matching questionnaires that connect users with common interests and objectives. Scheduling and topics are driven by the mentee, ensuring the conversations always address student needs.
  • What am I expected to do?  Mentors are expected to accept or decline meeting requests by mentees and provide their mentees with support during the scheduled meeting. While some interactions can take place via email and other web-related tools, the meetings will likely be virtual through a video conferencing platform. Mentors should work with their mentees to determine what kind of support will be most useful—specific feedback related to finding jobs, general career advice, information on higher studies, technical information, personal encouragement, and so on.
  • How much time am I committing per month? We ask that mentors commit at least one hour a month to allow for at least one student interaction per month. We know that students would benefit from your expertise and that your experiences will provide invaluable insight into the industry and career opportunities.
  • Are there any potential risks to me or my company?  No. It is not appropriate for mentors to engage in any business transactions with their mentees; instead, the relationship should only involve the flow of general information and advice.

Mentor DO's

  1. Commit at least one interaction/hour of support per month.
  2.  Set aside time for the mentoring process and honor all appointments.
  3.  Be flexible on meeting times and places.
  4. Respond to emails from your mentee within two days of receipt.
  5. Keep information that your mentee has shared with you confidential. If something concerning the mentee needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship.
  6. Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange.
  7. Foster creativity and independence. Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement.
  8. Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee.
  9. Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions.
  10. Above all, LISTEN.
